i-Dtec did not kick in broo!!!!

No Honda has not revolutionized diesel Engines. There I said it before the matter got out of hands. phew!
No VTEC kicked in yoo feels here..just normal forced induction. But Honda being Honda there is a catch.. and hear me out on this one.
Now this isn’t the first time Honda introduced a diesel ,but the petrol always overshadowed its stickier counterpart in this case. The original diesel was a humble commonrail direct injection motor and in no ways was able to look upto the mighty vtec. The new one differs in this sense , it sticks out its head and wants respect .

So what do we have here ?..

The new Brainchild of Honda

Earth Dreams Technology is the latest gen of engines from Honda and are committed to higher fuel economy and lower emissions. Every new engine from the Japanese giant will receive this treatment . The one I tested was fitted to 2015 Honda Jazz (Fit for american markets). It’s a 1.5L turbocharged Diesel , it had a worldwide debut in India with the Amaze.
What makes it special is how its built, it has all Aluminium block which reduces the weight drastically and aids cooling (as aluminium absorbs and expels heat quicker than traditional steel ) ,it’ s accompanied by a small turbocharger. It develops all of its peak torque at just 1650 rpms ,which makes it quite peppy to drive in city and makes small overtakes fun. Its mated to a
7 speed ( 6+1R) manual transmission. It has short throws and and is quite rewarding to shift cogs . But leave it in 3rd and you will have to seldomly use the clutch . The 6th helps out on open motorways when the needle settles at 2000 rpm at 100kmph (60mph) and gives a handsome average of 25kmpl . The engine is vibration free at city speeds ,and only gets discomforting when the engine is stressed .No diesel engine loves to redline :( and this is no exception . Although the power band is uniformly distributed the engine redlines at a mere 4500 rpms. Quick sprint from 0-100 took 3 gears .But its not here to win drag races ,it surly did the job of putting a smile on face of a vtec addict like me.

DOWNSIDES

  1. Engine noise.
The problem with Aluminium blocks is that they don’t do a good job keeping the vibrations in control . You do feel its a Diesel but unlike other harsh players out there it does not reach to you via the steering.

2.Smaller Power Band
Although you get a healthy 200 Nm of torque to play with ,you have to get the job done with it in short shift.NO chasing the ridiculous redlines the vtecs love.
