This 911 Speedster Heritage Design Package Is Automotive Marmite

Adding classic-style race numbers to the 911 Speedster, painting a few bits white and adding legacy Porsche graphics won’t tickle everyone’s fancy

The 911 Speedster is already a nod to heritage, recalling the days of the classic open-top, Beetle-based 356. But Porsche has decided to go a step further with the Heritage Design Package. Just like the sandwich spread Marmite, it’ll have some people in raptures and others shooting bile from their nostrils.

It starts with GT Silver Metallic body paint, the only option for this package as a tribute to a time when most German racing cars were silver. Then there’s a white-painted front bumper and white ‘arrows’ on the front wings, before we come to the most obvious additions.

The white circles containing a black number of your choice sit proudly on the frunk and the doors. They’re not compulsory but if you’re deliberately paying for the package, you’re surely going to see them as fundamental. Then, along the bases of the doors and across the bottoms of the number backgrounds, are classic Porsche name graphics.

The back end is left more or less untouched except for gold-coloured Speedster badges, which creates a bit of a stylistic imbalance between the heavily vajazzled front end and the nearly standard rear.

Either you’ll love this look, recalling a gleaming 356 Speedster (or maybe a tiny hint of Herbie) in the hands of a seasoned gentleman racer, or you’ll see it as a tasteless waste of cash on what is a beautifully subtle upgrade from a standard 911.

It’s not all about the paint job. Inside there’s a two-tone leather look in black and cognac. The seats, specified as full buckets as standard, feature a historic Porsche crest embossed into the headrest. Everywhere you look there are details in gold and cognac, and to top it off there’s a limited edition gold plaque sited between the two seats.

Finally, because lifestyle, there’s a specific watch to go with the Heritage Design Package. Called the Chronograph 911 Speedster Heritage Design, it will only be offered to owners of this car. It has a carbonfibre dial and a rotor modelled on the Speedster Heritage Design Package’s 20-inch centre-lock wheels, both in design and colour. The strap is made from genuine Porsche interior leather in the same cognac finish.
