Why I Prefer The Newer Skyline/Infiniti G/Infiniti Q50 Over The '90s Nissan Skyline. #blogpost
The R32/R33/R34 Skyline. Especially in GT-R form, it won many races, driven by enthusiasts worldwide, and also being famously known as the Godzilla. Jeremy Clarkson once said, “The Skyline – and I’m not joking — is one of the best cars… …I have ever driven.” Yeah, being a famous car journalist he isn’t joking at all. Non-GTR variants are also praised of being tuneable, and some even being the cheaper alternatives to the GTR.
Meanwhile at the same time, the V35/V36/V37 Skyline, also known as the Infiniti G/Q50 ROTW, doesn’t live up with the “Godzilla” name, probably because there’s no GT-R variant. These cars, despite being as an alternative to the usual German suspects, it’s fully unknown to some. It was often overlooked, and also not too much like this series because of the changes made to the series.
Despite I respect the R-series Nissan Skyline, yet weirdly, I actually prefer the Infiniti. Not to mention I actually considered the Q50 as my first car yet it’s not too realistic because of the prices and the lack of popularity in Malaysia. Well, at least I mentioned the word “considered”, and that’s doesn’t mean I will get it.
In terms of styling, I prefer the looks of the Infinitis. (Or Skyline V-Series if you came from the land of the rising sun) It looks elegant that actually can make the Germans felt dull and badly-designed. Especially the sedan versions, I felt that the sedan versions of the new-age Skylines look unique, subtle and refreshing. Yes, I saw Infiniti Q50s OTR, it really stands out against the crowd.
What about the Skyline R-series? Yes, if you mean teh GT-R version, it do really shine, but if you remove the GT-R kit alongside the RB26, it just became another “boring”-looking Japanese sedan. Unappealing. Dull. Truth. Unless you mod it nicely.
The V-series Skyline always look sleek even without modification. The keyword: Undiluted style and substance.
Being more of a luxury cruiser, the V-series Skyline isn’t really popular to car enthusiasts just because the stereotype of luxury cars are boring. Yes, maybe the tech made the V-series Skyline a bit boring, but please, unlike Audi’s A4, RWD and AWD are only drivetrains available to the V-series Skyline.
One person I know owned a V35 coupe. Until he really drove it, he previously thought about the V35 is boring to drive. Well, his idea is broken when he drove it, and he found out the V35 is nice to drive. Yes, you don’t get sport-car like driving feels, yet it’s still a great car, honestly.
Admit that, you still get fun on the V-series Skyline, with the benefits of more comfort compared to the more mass-market R-series.
The Nissan Skyline R-series are very popular. Yeah, their fanbase is (not really) filled up with “OMG DA GTR IS DE BEST” guys (remember the “reasons why I don’t really like JDM” post?) and many things saw that the Skyline, even base models are tuneable. The R-series Skyline is popular to tuners, drifters, track racers and drag racers alike.
But there’s one big question: is the V-series Skyline untuneable? No.
Just like any JDM car, the V-series Skyline is tuneable. Yet because of it’s low popularity, tuning parts for the car isn’t as common as the R-series had. Yet it doesn’t mean it’s untuneable, people everywhere made 1k hp G35s, race G37s, drift V35 Skylines and even Nissan, installed a GT-R engine into a Q50. Now that’s a big answer. No Skyline V-series is untuneable. And yes, one day, I will make my Aussie style Q50 dream came true. (anyone remember this?)
Another problem is the people. Many people thought the real Skylines are the R-series and they thought the V-series isn’t a Skyline. This is just like saying a smartphone isn’t a PC. It is, yet it is actually the hybrid of a phone and a compact PC. Mind you. I respect the R-series, but the V-series is and always a Skyline to me. You can’t really deny it.
The V-series Skyline, despite not as iconic as the R-series GT-R, doesn’t behaves badly at all IRL. It looks great, it drives great, it tunes like it deserves to be, and most importantly, it livens up to the Skyline name, despite it’s a Infiniti anywhere else.
Now someone please give me money for the Barra-swapped Q50 I dreamt of. I want it. JK XD

That’s the thing, people only like modded R-series Skyline’s, not the stock ones.
True.
I actually prefer stock over excessively modified
Hey, I don’t agree with that.
I prefer stock ones.

G37 is alright, but the latest Infiniti Q50 is the limpest driving experience out there, a 3 series makes so much more sense
I admit that too. Yet I still prefer the Q50 over the R34. But not against the 3-series.
Only if you get DAS, really. And considering the what the 3 series gives up over its competitors, I wouldn’t take any 3 series lower than a 335i, which has its own host of issues.
As you mentioned, Infiniti G/Skyline Vs are more luxurious alternatives to the Nissan Skyline Rs, with bigger engines to boot, although, G20/Primera aside, they’re basically longer, more luxurious and practical Nissan 350/370Zs than anything. But even amongst JDM guys, it is rather surprising how overlooked they are, for sure. My planned first project car I’m aiming for a 300ZX TT, but in the event that I can’t get a clean, lower mileage example, I wouldn’t mind getting a G37 Coupe instead.
