Why Would The $1.3 Mil McLaren P1 Use An Open Diff?

Ya know, I would really like it videos on CT had a write up with them. I can’t watch videos on my lunch break at work but I can read an article.

I though open diffs could vary the amount of power sent to each wheel and that locked diffs were the ones that had a fixed 50 50 split.

I thought you could Google stuff you didn’t know and it would give you answers? Lol kidding… Kind of. Research my friend. Locked diffs send 100% to both wheels. Same amount of power as they are locked together. Only have those on 4wd cars because it doesn’t allow the tires to move separately around corners (where the inside tire needs to rotate less times than the outside tire). Bad news if you are on dry pavement because the inside one will be forced to lose traction and skip to keep up with the outside tire. Thus only used in 4x4s you turn on in bad traction conditions. Open diffs send the power to the wheel with the least resistance so it will spin faster to try and grab traction. That’s where you get one tire fires. One wheel is moving slowly or not at all in the case of a burnout.. And the other wheel that has less traction will receive most or all of the power to try and get it traction. Limited slips, sometimes known as PosiTraction, do the opposite. Whatever wheel has the most grip gets more power to propel the car forward better. When they both have the same amount of grip they both receive the same amount of power so in a burnout you get both wheels spinning trying to get the car moving forward. If one is on gravel and one on the road.. The tire on the road will recieve more power to move the car forward and the one on the gravel will receive however much it can handle until that tire loses grip.. So like an 80-20 split or whatever, even 100-0 sometimes. To the best of my understanding anyway. I could be wrong. But yes the open and LSD can split the power and the locked diff cannot. Like I said to the best of my knowledge.. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

Isn’t it a case of using more braking to charge the batteries? KERS yo
