Take A Look At The First Google Glass Traffic Ticket

While Google's augmented reality glasses are providing a headache for legislators, this US cop has decided they're not legal for drivers

Depending on which way you look at it, Google Glass has the potential to revolutionise motoring. Either you see it as another way to distract a driver, or a way of centralising information allowing the driver to concentrate on driving.

Here at CT, we're the latter. Assuming you don't decide you need to catch up on the latest episode of The Walking Dead on your way to work - satellite navigation can be placed on your peripherals without the need for a distracting screen that requires regular glances. Phone calls can be undertaken on a par with even the best hands free kits. You could even record accidents for use in insurance claims. All of this can be done through voice commands and leaves your hands free to concentrate on important stuff like steering.

Then there are people who believe the former, such as this police officer in California. In England, it is illegal to wear Google Glass while driving, however in America there are currently no laws specifically outlawing them. This officer has written a ticket for "Driving with Monitor visible to Driver (Google Glass)."

The law he is referencing essentially refers to the fact that it is illegal for drivers to have television screens visible to them while driving. An excellent law, I'm sure you'll agree, however the law specifically excludes satellite navigation devices, which ticket-receiver Cecilia Abadie could well have been using at the time.

We can totally understand the concerns with this, as there will be idiots surfing the web while cruising the highways, but these are the idiots already playing Angry Birds at 70mph. Idiots will always be idiots.

But do the pros outweigh the cons? It's clear that lawmakers are leaning towards Google Glass being illegal behind the wheel, which is a shame, so in the meantime we'll have to continue dreaming of an augmented reality commute.

So what do you think? Google Glass is a force for good, or a dangerous distraction? Hit the comments!
