Saab is in the midst of a large-scale launch campaign for the new 9-5. A highly important product? No doubt. As such, Saab isn't about to rest on its laurels.
The impressive sedan, launched for the 2010 model year, has already gotten more engine options for 2011 to broaden its appeal in the marketplace.
The new 9-5 gets three new engine options to choose from - a 1.6-liter turbocharged gas unit, a 2.0-liter turbo diesel and a 2.0-liter turbo BioPower flex-fuel engine.
BioPower is unique in its ability to run on gas and E85 ethanol in any variety or blend.
Saab says that regardless of fuel or the percentage, the BioPower engine produces 220 horsepower and and 258 pound feet of torque. Nice! The BioPower model is available with two-wheel drive or XWD in all model specifications.
The next engine, a diesel option, is a 2.0-liter TTiD two-stage turbo diesel that makes 190HP and 295 lb-ft of torque at a low 1,750 rpm.
Like all of the new engine options, it can be included with XWD, Saab's all-wheel drive system. That makes it the first all-wheel drive diesel Saab.
Last (and probably least) is the new 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, making 180HP and 169.6 lb-ft of torque from 2,200 rpm to 5,500 rpm.
It isn't clear whether these new engines will be available globally on the 9-5 for 2011, or if they are for the European market. Either way, we're glad to see Saab expanding the 9-5's appeal - and to be talking about product once again!
