Buried in a Porsche press release today outlining the brand’s product launches for 2024 was an interesting tidbit: the long-rumoured hybrid 911 will finally arrive this year.

An electrified 911 has long been rumoured, going right back to 2010 when Porsche unveiled a hybrid version of the 997 GT3 R racer that would go on to enter the Nürburgring 24 Hours. The German firm has long said that it plans to keep internal combustion around in its flagship sports car for as long as regulations allow, and a hybrid element is thought to be a part of that plan.

It’ll arrive in summer as part of a mid-life ‘992.2’ refresh for the current 992 generation of 911, which has been around since 2019. It’s not clear what form the hybrid system will take, although Porsche says it’s “committed to a combination of three types of powertrains: efficient ICEs, exciting plug-in hybrids and innovative all-electric models,” hinting at a possible plug-in element.

It’s also unconfirmed whether the hybrid will be a standalone model in the vein of the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray or if it’ll become a powertrain option on one of the existing versions of the sprawling 911 range. Autocar reckons on the former, reporting that it’ll take the form of a new version with the petrol flat-six powering the rear wheels and an electric motor driving the front.

Besides the addition of the hybrid, expect the 992 range as a whole to get some updates outside and in. These mid-life updates for the 911 tend to begin with the unveiling of the core Carrera models before faster stuff like the Turbo and GT3 arrive a little later, and we’d bet on much the same pattern being followed here.

We also heard rumours a few months ago that the Carrera models would be phasing out their twin-turbo flat-sixes in favour of a newly developed, naturally-aspirated 3.6-litre unit, but Porsche is keeping schtum on this for now.

The 992.2 is the fourth big product launch this year for Porsche, following on from the third-generation Panamera, electric second-gen Macan and updated Taycan, all of which have already been revealed. With the arrival of a hybrid 911 and the 718 set to go all-electric for its next generation, it means that every single model in Porsche’s range will soon be available in some sort of electrified form. Don’t expect the 911 to go completely EV any time soon, though.
