A New Vauxhall Is Born And It's Called 'Adam'

This is not the first time that Vauxhall have given one of their small cars an odd name. The last new car they revealed at Geneva this year was a Corsa-sized SUV called the Mokka, which could probably handle terrain such as a sea of coffee beans.

This is not the first time that Vauxhall have given one of their small cars an odd name. The last new car they revealed at Geneva this year was a Corsa-sized SUV called the Mokka, which could probably handle terrain such as a sea of coffee beans.

Vauxhall's new 3.7m long city car is pitched as another fashionable four-seater to go in the wardrobe with the Fiat 500, the Mini, Audi's A1 and Volkswagen's Up. Like the other outfits, it will have a premium starting price that could possibly be higher than the current Corsa but it will come with a choice of economical three cylinder engines.

So, why not name it 'Junior' as previously planned? Vauxhall told Autocar magazine that the Junior name didn't live up to the little car's maturity. “Adam has a mature character; it’s universal without being neutral. It’s something you’ll definitely have an opinion on.” Quite a lot of people have been 'Mokking' it indeed.

Its identity will make sense to anyone based outside the UK as Vauxhalls in countries such France, Spain and Germany are actually called Opels. The founder of the German firm was a man called Adam Opel and he founded the company way back in 1862.

The name may fit in nicely with the European Opel brand but it doesn't really go with Vauxhall in my opinion and these pictures just show something that looks like the lovechild of a Corsa and an old Ford Ka in disguise.

However, the finished product, which they promise will look fun, muscular and cool, will be presented at the Paris Motor Show in September. We wonder if there will be a Fiat 500C rival following suit called Eve.
