The McLaren 570GT Is A 570S With Added Waft Potential

McLaren has revealed the latest car in its 'Sports Series' - a softer version of the 570S with a load of extra luggage space

I’m sure it’s a problem many of us face: you want a mid-engined supercar - something like a McLaren 570S, say - but want to do a lot of miles in it. What’s the answer to this thoroughly First World problem? The 570GT, apparently. It’s not - as previously reported - a 2+2, instead a softened 570S with extra luggage space.

The suspension has undergone “fine-tuning….to emphasise long distance comfort”, while the 19-inch front/20-inch rear wheels are shod in bespoke Pirelli P Zero tyres that are designed to reduce noise. The suspension changes consist of a reduction in spring rate stiffness - 15 per cent for the front and 10 per cent for the rear - while the steering rate has been slowed down ever so slightly.

The big news, though, is luggage capacity. This isn’t something that usually excites us a great deal, but for a car of this kind, the 570GT has frigging loads. As well as the 150 litres of storage in the frunk (CT ed-in-chief Alex can testify that the similarly sized frunk on the old 12C is big enough for an actual human being), you get an additional 220 litres behind the seats, giving a total of 370 litres.

This extra bit of storage - accessible via a side-hinged glass rear windscreen - means you get as much luggage space as in a BMW 1-series hatchback. Not bad.

Other changes include a quieter exhaust system, a more luxurious leather interior and soft-close doors. All of this ups the weight figure by 37kg, so although the GT has the same 562bhp 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 as the S, it’s slightly slower. Its 3.4 second 0-62mph time is 0.2sec down on the S, but it is capable of the same 204mph top speed.

All of this luxury supercar-ness will set you back £154,000, and the first few owners will get their hands on early examples in late 2016. Fancy seeing it in the metal? It’ll make its public debut at the Geneva motor show next week.

That’s dope. It’s a supercar with luggage space equivalent to a friggin’ BMW.
