Brabham's New Track Car Has 740bhp And 1200kg Of Downforce

With the ability to develop far more than its own weight in additional downforce, the Brabham BT62 will be powered by a 740bhp 5.4-litre V8 - without turbos
Brabham's New Track Car Has 740bhp And 1200kg Of Downforce

Reborn racecar maker Brabham has released another teaser ahead of the BT62’s full reveal, and now we know how mind-bendingly fast it’s going to be, too.

This track-only lightweight tips the scales dry at 972kg – 3kg lighter than the new Suzuki Swift Sport, and yet stuffed between the driver and rear wheels is a Brabham-badged, normally-aspirated 5.4-litre V8 with a casual 750 metric horsepower, or 740bhp.

It means the basic power-to-weight ratio is about 720bhp per tonne, which is enough to sound a little bit frightening. Extensive aerodynamic extras produce a colossal 1200kg of downforce, presumably at very high speed, while the stoppers are understandably carbon all round, with six-piston racing calipers at both ends.

Production will be limited to 70 cars at a price of £1 million plus options, plus taxes. The first deliveries will arrive later this year, we’re told. The full launch comes in a couple of weeks, immediately after which there’s a public showing, for which you can get tickets right here.

The P1 GTR has around 660Kg of downforce at 150MPH, so the aero system is gonna be pretty nutty to get almost double the figures of one of Mclarens track only models

I feel like there’s this new trend of making high end track cars, and sure it’s great and all to see people making seriously quick cars, but what on earth is the point of all that R&D if it isn’t gonna take part in racing

Dear FIA, Reintroduce GT-1, make these cars join in it

And then I’ll actually be bothered to watch your races

The McSenna has a 65m sq wing. I don’t know how the BT62 could beat that, but it produces way more downforce.

On a half related note could this be car car that Ash Walsh injured himself last year? The reports claimed it was a high speed crash during a top secret prototype test at Phillip Island, where the video claims the testing was held. Hmmm…

Power to weight ratio : 760bhp per tonne ! Because (740x1000)/972 = 760 bhp/tonne
