BMW Z4 Range Includes 194bhp 20i, 377bhp US-Spec M40i
If you want a BMW Z4 that’s more powerful than the M40i version, you’re all out of luck. There are no plans that we know of to make a full-on M Division Z4, so for the foreseeable, the M Performance Z will be the most potent derivative.
But here’s the thing: the version sold in the US will be quite a bit more powerful than the European-sped car. BMW has revealed that the Stateside M40i will develop 377bhp from its 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six, compared to 335bhp for those available the other side of the pond. ‘Murica!
If you’re happy with a drop in displacement and cylinder count, we now have details of the lower rungs of the Z4 ladder to bring you - up until now, we’d only seen specs for the range-topper.
The starting point will be the sDrive20i (which is not heading to the USA), developing 194bhp from a 2.0-litre twin-scroll turbocharged inline-four. It’ll do 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds, running out of breath at 149mph.
Sitting neatly between this and the M40i is the sDrive30i, with a more powerful version of the same four-banger. It puts out 254bhp, allowing for a 0-62mph time of 5.4 seconds. Like the M40i, it will keep going until an electronically-limited 155mph top speed. All cars are fitted with an eight-speed automatic gearbox - there’s definitely no manual option, I’m afraid.
With a capacity of 281 litres the boot has grown by 50 per cent compared to the last Z4, and retracting the fabric roof - which can be raised or lowered “within 10 seconds” while the car is moving at anything up to 31mph - won’t reduce available space.
All cars have 18-inch wheels as standard, with optional 19s on the menu. A 12.3-inch screen used in place of a physical instrument cluster is standard equipment too, and it’s paired with a 10.25-inch screen running BMW’s iDrive infotainment system.
The Z4 will be making its grand public debut at the Paris Motor Show next month. Fancy buying one? It’ll be launched around March 2019.

Europe is litrally ruining cars… i hate WLTP
Yeah, the old test procedure where a car would sometimes need literally twice as much fuel as advertised was sooo much better. The EU model is 0.2 s (4.6 s from 4.4 s) slower to 100 km/h, f-ing ruined I’d say.
No it’s not,
It’s saving cars from being advertised WAY ABOVE their actual MPGS
Blame Brexit.. trust me..
And that, my friends, is why Trump relaxed the emissions rules a bit for US autos. To stay realistic and give the auto manufacturers a little extra breathing room to progress naturally with technology instead of cutting corners and sacrificing everything just to gain a little more MPGs
Probably would go and buy a Cayman with the money I would spend on this
or a C63
Isn’t the Supra supposed to be getting a manual at some point?
Possibly. Head of design is pushing for the option. We’ll see if Toyota gives in.
You know, i was actually thinking of getting one of these in a few years right up until i read that its only automatic. It looks good, has good power, and being a turbo 6 cylinder means that modifications can easily make this into quite a little monster but without a manual its all kinda pointless. Guess ill go for an older Z4 with the N54 and a manual
Or you just hit up ya boy Tavarish, I bet he and his Russian friend will swap in a manual from an E39 5-Series with ease 😂
GS6-37BZ should fit on the new Z4
Thicc butt
No manual, so I’d get a Porsche 718 Boxster or Cayman if I had the money.
April 2019: “BMW Z4 making more power than advertised”
This shit isn’t even newsworthy.
BMW advertises their cars since at least a decade with power at the wheels, not crank hp. Most dynos still measure crank hp though, hence the discrepancy. I’m just suprised almost noone points this out.
This cars looks are growing on me.
I still hate the front end though, but the rest looks very nice imo
Lol mines the exact opposite
The front end is the best, everything else is a bit too weirdly proportioned
I understand the new test, but cars run dangrously lean to get the best fuel econamy out of cars! Hense why all these sports cars are making less power…. on everyday cars, brilliant… on the higher end…. it sucks.
Man it looks great
