BMW Prices Six-Cylinder 7-Series
The North American International Auto Show has been dominating the news as expected, particularly with releases from General Motors and Ford.
The North American International Auto Show has been dominating the news as expected, particularly with releases from General Motors and Ford.
However, some other (more mundane) things are continuing to happen as well. That includes BMW introducing pricing information for the new six-cylinder 7-Series at the show.
If you were expecting the new six-cylinder to be cheap (first of all, why were you - this is BMW we're talking about), that isn't the case. But, it does offer a nice reduction on the price for those who don't need the extra power of BMW's 400 horsepower V-8 engine.
The last time a six-cylinder was available in a BMW 7-Series was in 1992. The six is available in both standard and extended length versions, coming in at $71,025 and $75,425 for the 740i and 740Li , a nearly $11,000 reduction off of the 750i's hefty sum.
The engine is a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter (!) inline unit, making 315 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. Seeing a small-displacement 3.0-liter in such a large and expensive car like the 740i is surprising compared to other manufacturers. You'll notice it is being referred to as the 740i, in order to sound more expensive.
That kind of issue with designation is something that we thought about in the recent rumors regarding an Infiniti G25. We'll see how the new, cheaper 740i does on the market soon enough.
