Black & Matte Special Edition Mazda MX-5
I like Miatas (nee MX-5s) a lot. And I also have a real penchant for hot rods (much to my father's dismay), so I am generally predisposed to like primer black as an automotive "finish".
I like Miatas (nee MX-5s) a lot. And I also have a real penchant for hot rods (much to my father's dismay), so I am generally predisposed to like primer black as an automotive "finish". So that means that a new, special edition of the Miata that's all primer black hits a couple of bull's eyes with me.
Sadly though, this is for the fun little coupe's 20th birthday in France, so it's unlikely I'll see one on these shores (sadly). It was rolled out in Paris at the Salon du Cabriolet, Coupé & SUV, and no, I've never heard of that shindig, nor do I know just what the hell it is. But anyway, there it is. Or perhaps "they" are, because I think there might be two of these little specials: Black and Matte.
But I see only one, and it is only one that I shall talk about. Which will be a little tough, since details are scant. Which is unfortunate. It looks like it's an all black on black version of the power retractable hardtop – or PRHT in Mazda parlance. Doesn't look like there's any performance mods or anything.
But the PRHTs are worth coveting, in any case. I always said I'd give up my 1994 R-Package when they pry it from my cold dead hands. And really, the only time I've wavered from that was when Mazda rolled out this guy. I've seen them in operation, and they are just flat out amazing and too cool. The thing can go from top fully up to top fully down in 12 seconds. Or to put it in more practical terms, while you're waiting at a stoplight. Also, the top only adds something like 80 pounds to the all up weight of the Miata. Sure, that runs counter to the grain of the car, but staying dry in a sudden rain shower is worth some considerations.
And of course, seeing this special all decked out like this does give me the cheapskate idea of just getting a good used one, or perhaps a used one in need of some body work, and just spraying it in flat black.
Just a thought though.
