Okay so I think my crankshaft pulley broke off, and it ate away my serpentine belt. Is this an easy fix? How much will it cost me?

Ummm….alot?

Not sure…did it strip the crank splines? Or just falloff.

Not exactly sure what you mean, could you maybe post a picture. I feel as though the outer ring of my pulley just detached, as the rubber in between was worn. Not sure of the technical terms…

okay so the red arrow is what came off of the green arrow. And when that came off it messed up the serpentine belt

The part alone is pretty expensive (atleast on my car) and if taken to a shop, the install is very… involved (expensive).

Good thing I’m broke :\

If it broke the crankshaft at all, you’re looking at a full rebuild. very expensive. Hopefully it’s just the pulley though. Good luck!

it seems like just the pulley, from what I can tell when the belts were changed (pretty good condition when i bought the car) the pulleys weren’t changed, so i think they just worn off. What happened was i smelled like a burning plastic or rubber, but the car was running fine, temp was fine, so i though it might’ve been someone’s tire blowing or something. I pulled into a parking lot, noticed i lost power steering, and the battery light came on the dash.I thought I stalled, but then realized it wasn’t that. I saw the outer ring of the lower pulley on the timing belt was on the bottom plastic under the engine. I deduced that when that fell off, it shredded up the serpentine belt (chopped up, but not ripped) and that’s what my problem was. Literally this morning some guy with a newer, better condition civic Si offered to trade for my car, but I turned him down since I was too attached, so if im looking at a full rebuild I feel dumb as hell.

Let’s just say, the belt that was moveing your valves out of the way of your piston has snapped.. The valve is now at a down position.. Your piston punched your valve trough the f@cking head… Your engine is a paper weight.

I feel like if it was that serious I’d get a check engine light, or the car would run rough. It was completely fine up until my serpentine belt got messed up, and my power steering died. I’m pretty sure(maybe a bit optimistic, I’m no mechanic this is just what I think happened.) that when the belts were changed, the pulleys weren’t. It always drew my attention to how bad they looked but I was told by many older people who aren’t into cars as much that “ you got a good price, it’s fine, just not pretty. I don’t want to tell you you’re wrong, but i honestly hope and feel that it’s just a pulley.

It’s like Jsp and ArchDukeFerdinand said; if it’s only the pulley on your serpentine belt, then no worries. But if the break extends to the timing belt and the timing belt slipped, chances are high you’re in trouble. I hope it’s only the pulley.

Yeah I noticed I lost power steering and I blamed it on the belt to the right since it got chewed up, but not broken. But now that I think about it it makes more sense that the serpentine wen’t since it didn’t have tension on it anymore, and the other belt was just damaged by the pulley when it broke off.

These guys are freaked idiots feeding you false information, your car is fine, the crank pulley is cheap to buy and so is the serpentine belt.

First thing first, if your serpentine belt breaks and or the crank pulley falls off, even while the engine is running, your engine will not need a rebuild… Nothing happens other than the steering wheel gets hard to move, the a/c stops blowing cold air and the battery quickly as runs out of juice and the engine turns off. If the timing belt or chain broke, then that’s another story but that is located inside the engine case… Not outside the engine.

Now what you’ll need to fix

You’ll have to rent or purchase a “harmonic balancer removal tool”.

-Use that tool to remove the remaining balancer cause it’s likely the pulley bolts snapped and are stuck inside so you have to replace it.

Once removed, use an impact gun to get the new one seated all the way back.
Then use some new bolts to bolt the new crank pulley to the new balancer.

Install your new serpentine belt and your all done.
A shop might charge you $120 in parts and 2 hrs labor.

Indeed, this is not the pulley of your timing belt, those pulleys have teeth on them. This one is indeed the pulley for the ac/ power steering.

Chances are I’ll take it to a shop since this all happened about 80 miles away from me… What was the belt that got eaten up then, the one near the alternator? If the one intact is the serpentine, which i guess makes more sense since the chewed up belt was still on tight and intact-ish I’ll just need a new one for that. Is that the tensioner?

UPDATE: Thanks everyone for their advice and insight. Due to my lack of mechanical knowledge, i mislabeled my serpentine belt as my timing belt. What happened is my crank pulley broke/fell off and it ate away at my power steering belt which also runs off the crank pulley.

Dafuq … First time I’ve seen this happen, but it should be A-OK. Just bokt on a new pulley and run a new belt. It’s not a difficult fix and the belts need to be changed anyways. Check the other pulleys for any signs of damage so it doesn’t happen again.

CJ has the right idea: I’m just gonna refer you to his comment XD

This has just happened to my slags car. Pulley fell off and alternater belt is hanging. What bothers me is what caused it? For that pulley to shear must of been some strain on something.. But what? Why not the a/c pulley, alternater pulley which look so much more weaker.
