Typically, when you start your car and its cold, the engine will idle pretty high (1500rpm and the like). Give it a few seconds (or a full minute or more if its really cold) and the RPM will drop significantly down to about 1000. It’s an audible change, can’t miss it.
I typically wait until that point before driving out slowly. Once the engine temp. gueage begins to climb, I drive it normally. However, until its at optimum operating temperature, I don’t hammer it.
