5 Niche Supercars that Deserve your Attention #blogpost
From Geneva to New York every year we see some new, optimistic young car brand aiming to leave their impact on the crowded motoring industry. Motor show after motor show these hopeful brands showcase their newest offerings in a bid to try and steal a few customers from already established brands and provide them with a unique and fresh experience that they will have likely never tried before. While over the years we have had as many fantastic new takes on the automotive world as we have laughable (I’m looking at you Icona!), for this article we will be looking at the most commendable of these offerings that have cropped up over the last few years. Here’s hoping that we see much more of what these brands have to offer in the near future.
The Rezvani Beast
The Ariel Atom is slightly deranged. Being the motoring equivalent of a mosquito, with jagged performance both in a straight line and through the corners the Atom is one track toy that must be treated with the fullest of a drivers respect. What happens however when you decide that the crazy little atoms performance isn’t enough? Well after consulting your doctor the next thing you should probably do is give Californian based company Rezvani a call as their supercar claims to have “the purest driving experience on sale today”. It’s a bold claim from such a small manufacturer however with 500 horses available from a supercharged 3.4 litre engine and a small weight increase over the atom it’s based upon, they may be onto something. Also take at look at the styling, if Darth Vader needed a set of wheels I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t have to look much further.
The Zenos E10
The large problem with many supercars is that they’re an expensive delicacy. Even a small prang on the fender of your precious Aston or Lamborghini could end in a monster repair bill and many sleepless nights. That’s not the case with the little E10. With it’s shell being built from a revolutionary blend of plastic and carbon fibre and that shell being surrounded by coloured fiberglass panels it allows this little pocket rocket to weigh next to nothing and as easy to dismantle and rebuild as a lego set. The shell is also much cheaper to manufacture than a conventional carbon fibre tub and pairing that with the 2.0 litre ecoboost motor from the Ford Focus ST allows the Zenos to cost a mere £25,000, five grand less than one of this cars main rivals, the lotus Elise. The E10 is also a peach to drive thanks to many of the cars handling aspects being fine tuned by a group of ex-caterham handling guru’s who were also responsible for establishing the company.
The KTM X-bow
Okay so maybe KTM are a little more well known than the other entries on this list however the little X-bow still doesn’t gather the love and attention it truly deserves so it gets a shout out. Being built by a renown Austrian motorcycle company, the X-bow was KTM’s first entry into the four wheeled market. Powered by a 2 litre nicked from Audi and looking like an angry species of deep sea fish, the X-bow excels on both twisty mountain roads and on a racetrack. While many different trims are offered, including one with several creature comforts such as a windscreen and doors, it’s the more powerful and uncivilized R that gains my favour with an added horsepower boost and 57kg diet. Also the little orange KTM is particularly good at scaring certain celebrities within the motoring world as you’ll see below.
The Polaris Slingshot
Now this one isn’t per strictly speaking a car, only having three wheels, however what the Slingshot lacks in alloys it makes up for in the fun department. Like KTM, Polaris didn’t make their fortune building cars instead utility vehicles such as quad bikes are how they’ve made their fortune. Although in 2014 the company decided that it was time to let their hair down and see what they could come up with, and boy did they create something special. Weighing in at only 764kg and having 170 BHP produced from a 2.4 litre GM sourced motor at it’s disposal, the Polaris is by no means all show and no go and with the unconventional wheel configuration it’s a given that any driver is in for a very unique driving experience. Be warned however as in the wrong hands Slingshot can be quite an unruly beast with a serious hatred for its single rear tire, as Mr Foust will now demonstrate.
The Donkervoort D8 GTO
The Dutch have always been a little bit mad and it seems as though their cars are no exception to this rule. Enter what looks like the lovechild of a caterham and that predator alien from the 80 si-fi romp, the Dokervoort D8 GTO. Having several parts sourced from Audi, including the GTO’s 340 BHP, five cylindered beating heart, and a lovingly crafted interior the D8 has all the makings of a unique and exquisite supercar. However don’t expect all this to come cheap as the Dutch Supercar in its base spec costs a whopping $130,000 dollars, more than any caterham or any other car on this list for that matter. However, it’s exclusivity you want, combined with amazing performance and scissor doors (Lambo lovers rejoice) look no further.
I hope everyone has enjoyed the second article iv’e posted on car throttle as much as the first. Wow, didn’t even know that half of these exicted! Just on a side note though, KTM is austrian, not australian lol, only knew that because they produce the modern husqvarna bikes. Great post, really like the condenced text of each car (or three-wheeler).
Thanks John for addressing my mistake and I hope you stick around for more 😉
There’s another one to add to the list, the Ultima GTR/Evolution
Sweet, will definelty add it in part 2
Great article, but pretty sure KTM is Austrian not Australian :P
No Bailey Blade?
Really ? Did you really just call KTM australian ? I’d laugh, but as an austrian I’m angry ^^…
I’ll definetly need to change that, sorry 😂
Zenos looks like ND miata
