Watch A Jeep Trackhawk Take On An 800bhp Escalade In This Very Practical Drag Race

Jeep's near-700bhp Grand Cherokee Trackhawk can be seen racing against Hennessey's HPE800 Cadillac Escalade

The small world of Muscle SUVs is a curious niche, isn’t it? Starting with something heavy and tall and giving it a hilarious amount of power is a brilliantly daft idea we’re totally on board with, and there’s arguably no sillier hot SUV than the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk.

Its 6.2-litre, Dodge Hellcat-shared supercharged V8 develops a whopping 697bhp, helping it charge from 0-60mph in just 3.5 seconds. So, wouldn’t it be fun to race it against something bigger and even more powerful?

Enter stage left, Hennessey’s Cadillac Escalade HPE800. Thanks to a 2.9-litre supercharger, upgraded internals and much more besides, this Caddy - which we recently saw beat a Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE - now makes 805bhp.

That’s over 100bhp more than the Jeep, but the Escalade is also quite a bit heavier, setting up a close drag race. Place your bets, then press play…

It’s so amazing that we live in a day where SUVs launch like sports cars. To think that 10 years ago if anyone even thought of something like that we would have been like “You’re crazy” but now it’s common.

It’s not that surprising, actually. There have been many American performance SUVs for decades. Typhoon, Explorer 5.0, Trailblazer SS, Durango R/T…. Those are all older than most CT users now, but matched many sports cars at the time.

A clear demonstration of the difference between OEM development and aftermarket tuning. Look how sorted and without drama the Hellcat launches. Then compare that to an incorrectly-damped, shaky start of the Caddy. One has power, the other one has power and everything that supports the power.

So a heavily modded, $100,000+ Caddy, can’t beat a stock $80,000 “Super Jeep”. What a time to be alive
