My 1999 Daihatsu Mira Engine replacement Part 3

My new engine is an EJ-DE to replace the EJ-DE that was originally in it. I bought the engine off of a guy on the internet for $170 (NZD). He said he got it from a Daihatsu in a car yard. He bought it to replace his 800cc, 3 cylinder ED Engine in his Daihatsu Mira it was either a L200 or L500 but he mated it to a front wheel drive gearbox with a Excedy heavy duty clutch.

New Engine

The EJ-DE has had all new Fluids, seals and gaskets put in it so it should be a good reliable engine as that’s how I need it to be. Before placing the engine into the engine bay, I had to pull all of the sensors off of the old engine and put them on like knock, oil, and water, (pressure and temperature) sensors on also manifolds and other odds and ends. It was pretty sad that the engine was robbed of most of its parts so luckily I had a spare engine to replace the parts with.

Flywheel was off my old engine as this one didn’t come with one I kept with the original flywheel bolts for now. The flywheel hasn’t been machined as I didn’t feel the need to. I plan on using the Daihatsu as a daily so it won’t be thrashed or pushed to it’s limits.

I put the new clutch and pressure plate on which took a bit to line up but got it in the end. I was lucky enough to be able to get the clutch and pressure plate overnight since a friend of mine works at a parts shop so it was ordered and shipped down overnight.

I managed to get the gearbox on and mounted to the engine which took a few adjustments mainly to the clutch plate as the clutch kit didn’t come with an alignment tool.

I managed to get the engine back in place it took my friend and I about half hour to get it lined up in its mounts and bolted up to the chassis. The most challenging part was the rear mount as the rubber was easily moved out of place eventually it decided to line up. I have most of the loom attached.

I managed to get the car started with no exhaust manifold it was quite loud and ran rich I was glad it ran after all the hard work. I was keen to hear it running as the neighbour started his race car up and it was pretty loud as well.

The oil pressure sensor on the old engine had snapped in half, so I glued it back together with some Selleys QuickFIX ultra repair. It seems to work as no lights have come up on the dash. I still need to tidy up some wires and get a new battery. I need to also work on the interior and exterior of the car and get it all tidy.

The engine is finally in and running I will be still doing more engine work so I can get a picture of the end product to share. I’m so happy with the progress that I have made so far, I’m planning on getting the car road legal in 2 or so weeks hopefully.
