This Oldsmobile Toronado Had An Impressive Touchscreen In 1989

You might think touchscreens in cars are a new idea, but 25 years ago GM had fitted its Visual Information Centre to the Oldsmobile Toronado Trofeo

Touchscreen systems can be seen in any number of cars these days, and you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a fairly new development. Turns out, you’d be wrong. 25 years ago the Visual Information Centre was GM’s CRT-based touchscreen device, which controlled everything from the radio to the climate controls. Our favourite feature is the ‘navigation’ tab, which links to a compass!

It might not have the slick functionality of a modern device, but for a system so old, it’s a mighty impressive bit of kit.
