The US Wants To Massively Reduce German Car Imports
Donald Trump wants to massively cut the number of German cars being sold in America, according to reports in German media.
In a meeting with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and European Council President Donald Tusk, where journalists were present, the American President is quoted as saying:
“The Germans are bad, very bad. See the millions of cars they are selling in the US. Terrible. We will stop this.”
Several German newspapers have reported the quotes, along with suggesting that the current American government ‘still doesn’t understand’ that the EU is unable to renegotiate trade deals on a country-by-country basis.
President Trump has previously said that he would tax German manufacturers an additional 35 per cent if they wanted to sell cars in the US, making them vastly more expensive than any American rivals.
We can’t imagine that VAG, BMW Group and Mercedes are too pleased at the idea, but ultimately it could be counter-productive for America anyway if the wealthy German companies invest in jobs elsewhere instead. We have to wonder how Trump might like the sound of billions of dollars being pumped into China instead of the US, but hey, we’re not politicians.

Jaguar Land Rover should buy the cars off the Germans for a price the Germans intend to make money on, then export the cars from the UK making them British Exports :D

TBH he doesn’t need to do this. American cars are getting better and better. I mean the GT350r defeated the M4 GTS by 3 seconds around laguna seca and the GTS is twice as expensive
But there are still some Bimmer lovers in the US, including me. I really hope this law doesn’t pass.
That doesn’t matter at all. The American sports cars are good indeed, but they only make up a neglectable fraction of the sold cars. The vast majority of the sold cars are normal passenger cars - and the American ones of them are all worse than the European competition.
The man literally had a Mercedes-McLaren SLR, and a couple of Bentleys. He’s just a hypocrite.
I doubt he is concerned about top-of-the-line performance cars, as they don’t produce a lot of profit. Sedans and SUVs is where it’s at.

Why though, I mean what the point of people like them to the point they are buying them, why is it such a problem now.
Classic ‘Murica. Instead of raising the quality of their own domestic products (‘cause that costs money), they’d rather just get rid of foreign competition.

It’s not classic America. America imports a lot of European cars, and the German makers have plants here.

it’s a little thing called (excuse the puns): being driven out of business. Trump can’t promote American car sales (sales drive development) if the competition is too strong. Unlike a restaurant, the domestic car sales of a country cannot decide to “move” to another location once the competition get’s too strong, therefore the only solution is to remove the competition from the equation completely, force them out or have them pay a much larger import tax. It’s not a very attractive offer for the imports, but it will be beneficial for the American car industry.
Did people forget that American cars are taxed when imported into Europe? So we’re all ok with that, but when America tries to setup something similar it’s suddenly a bad idea? I propose we get rid of the import tax on both sides so it’s fair in either direction, but since that won’t happen, the next best thing is to put a similar tax on imported cars into the US so the competition is at least fair.
Sounds familliar. Chicken-Tax anyone?
