Surprise: The Next Porsche Macan Will Be Electric Only

It didn’t seem that long ago that Porsche was pulling the sheet off its very lightly facelifted first-generation Macan, but already, Stuttgart has made an announcement about the second-gen version of the crossover. And it’s a doozy: it turns out the next Macan will be reinvented as an all-electric SUV.

It’s a huge deal because the Macan is a massive seller for Porsche - it’s the company’s best-selling car, and in 2018 it comfortably sold in bigger numbers than the 911 and Panamera combined. Porsche is clearly confident about its electric powertrain tech, which we’ll see first in the Taycan.

The Taycan will arrive at the tail end of the year, followed in 2020 by the production version of the Mission E Cross. The EV Macan will arrive in 2021 as Porsche’s third all-electric vehicle, no doubt using a similar twin-motor powertrain to the Taycan and E Cross. It’ll be built at the firm’s Leipzig facility, which is being remodeled as its base for electric vehicle development and production.

Surprise: The Next Porsche Macan Will Be Electric Only

Speaking about the move, Porsche AG chairman of the board Oliver Blume said:

“By 2022 we will be investing more than six billion euros in electric mobility, and by 2025 50% of all new Porsche vehicles could have an electric drive system. Nevertheless, over the next ten years we will focus on a drive mix consisting of even further optimised petrol engines, plug-in hybrid models, and purely electrically operated sports cars. Our aim is to take a pioneering role in technology, and for this reason we will continue to consistently align the company with the mobility of the future.”

It makes sense for Porsche to make the Macan electric, i mean most people don’t buy it for its Driving Characteristics (despite being the best handling car in its class) and its not like the Macan will get boring with an Electric Powertrain, its Porsche we’re talking about here

I’m disappointed that new 911 isn’t EV only. If it would weigh over 4000 lbs it would be much better. Because heavy batteries make cars better!

You do realize that the low centre of gravity and electric torque vectoring make up for the extra weight? Clarkson, the biggest EV hater praised the Model X for it’s handling, and that’s the worse handling EV you can buy…

The 911 can have a nice 6 cylinder for years to come. I don’t think we aren’t ready to loose the petrol power. Maybe the next generation will grow up around these EVs and they won’t really appreciate a rear engine sports cars.

TBH is anyone suprised? Porsche owns a part of Rimac, with whom they have already build battery and powertrain for the Taycan. They also have the E-Tron Quattro.

Also, EVs have a benefit of being good to drive while not sacrificing comfort, something a hot SUV (or crossover however you want to call it) would extremely benefit from.

Nevertheless a huge step foward for the electric evolution

In fairness electric or not, SUVs are already causing a nuisance. Where I live, we’re the 4th fastest growing city… in the world and while that’s a very positive thing, it’s also quite concerning. Because our roads are still 1970s standards with no room for parking, no room to drive above average speed of 30 km/h, no junctions, no road signs, no road discipline and no quality of roads. Couple that with people raking in tons of cash, they’re going out and blowing it all on SUVs. I kid you not, the moment I step out of my house, 30% of the vehicles I see on the road are MPVs, crossovers and SUVs. And all they do is drive slowly because the roads are small, there’s too much traffic and loonies roaming about on the road and then you have these people with loads of cash not knowing how to spend on a car end up buying SUVs after SUVs because that’s part of the status symbol culture. No wonder car makers all want to enter India to get a slice of that pie and sell SUVs only. It’s depressing tbh.

Like Salomondrin said Rimac could to supply some technology for the Volkswagen Audi Group

I ain’t liking where this trend is going

Me neither. I live in a city that is developing very quickly par the roads and road discipline. And that’s a concern already seeing more SUVs than sedans or hatchback.
