The Top 10 Touring Products For Your MX-5

As we’ve covered many, many times, the Mazda MX-5 is an extraordinarily good car in terms of handling, and it really isn’t much of a stretch to suggest that it has one of the best realised chassis ever sold by a mass market, volume car manufacturer. Of course there’s one downside to the MX-5’s diminutive size and light weight, and that’s a lack of storage space, a problem that’s made all the more acute when you factor in how fun a summer touring car the little roadster actually is. Don’t fret if you’re planning on taking your MX-5 out for a tour of the UK (or indeed further afield) and can’t fit everything in though, as we’ve put together a list of the top 10 touring parts and modifications. They’ll help make your MX-5 more practical and more stylish, so it’s very much a win-win!

Stainless Steel/Wood Luggage Rack For Mk1/Mk2
One of our best selling products, this neat luggage rack features a stainless steel frame with stylish wooden slats, a combination which lends it an understated, retro look. The rack can be fitted or removed within minutes, looks great on both Mk1 and Mk2 MX-5s, and enables you to carry all manner of loads, including bulky travel cases. It ships with all the required brackets and mounting gear so you can have it in place within no time.

Luggage Strap Kit
A fairly essential purchase this, certainly if you don’t want your prized possessions flying off and littering the A and B roads of Britain! Designed for use with the various luggage racks we stock and available for all four generations of MX-5, the straps can be specified in either black or tan leather, with a set of 3 dispatched with each order. The longest strap measures 150cm, the two shorter ones 106cm, meaning that even large, oddly shaped loads can be securely anchored.

ND Carbon Fibre Luggage Rack
Very much at the upper end of the touring gear market, this carbon fibre luggage rack is a genuine Mazda accessory, and one that will make a fine addition to any Mk4 MX-5. Its carbon fibre construction means that it’s both incredibly light and impressively strong (and ensures that it looks absolutely stunning when mounted), while its clever design allows for all manner of oddly shaped loads to be transported. The only limitation is the Mk4’s aluminium boot-lid, and this means that the rack is restricted to carrying loads of 10kg or less.

Boot Bag
An alternative to the more traditional luggage rack, these boot bags are 100% waterproof, very hard wearing and provide a massive 50 litres of extra storage space. Ideal if you’re planning on driving somewhere where the weather conditions are less than perfect, the boot bag is made nylon coated PVC and is high frequency welded, the latter stage an important one, as it ensures that there are no open holes from sewing for water to get in! The bag sits atop a sheet of soft, non-slip matting (supplied), meaning that there’s no chance of damaging your paintwork with buckles, straps or other fasteners. The bags are suitable for fitment to all four generations of MX-5.

Boot Bag Shelf Bag
An ingenious space solution for NA and NB owners seeking a little extra storage space, this smaller version of the bag covered elsewhere on this list has been specially designed to fit across the parcel shelf located behind the seats, with the tonneau cover pop-studs re-purposed to keep it securely fastened. Made from the same nylon coated PVC as the regular Boot Bag, the Shelf Bag offers an impressive 19 litres of storage space, features a full length zip and a pair of carry handles. It’s a surprisingly versatile product and the perfect size for last minute weekends away.

Boot Pouch Storage System
There’s no getting away from the fact that the MX-5’s boot is on the small size, but this cleverly designed boot pouch enables you to maximise what limited space there is available. The real leather pouch storage system has been designed to perfectly ape the shape of the NA MX-5’s boot area, and fits securely into place using the clips that hold the boot lining in place. While it might not be able to store everything needed for a weekend of touring, its clever design means that essentials can be securely held in place, so no more opening the boot after a day of driving to find all your possessions have been scattered around!

Revo Luggage Rack
Another luggage rack that’s suitable for all models of MX-5 (including the recently launches ND), yet one that’s rather different in design. The clever layout of the Revo Rack means that there’s no chance of metal buckles or clamps making contact with your paintwork, in turn eliminating the potential for unsightly scratches or chips, something that cannot be said for the majority of traditional luggage storage products. A trio of 25mm nylon webbing straps and EPDM sponge rubber supports are used instead, and these securely mount the rack to your boot-lid without posing a risk to your bodywork. The rack can support an impressive 500kg of luggage, with the weight evenly spread via the aforementioned EPDM sponges, again eliminating the risk of bodywork damage. It’s quite rare that a genuine game-changer comes along, but the Revo Rack is just that. Follow the link below to find out more.

Automatic Digital Air Compressor
While not a touring product in the strict sense of the term, it’s certainly fair to say that there’s little more annoying than getting a puncture midway through a nice, fun-focussed drive…except perhaps getting a puncture in the middle of a rain shower! Since the latter can never be totally ruled out thanks to Britain’s ‘interesting’ summer weather, we’d recommend investing in one of these Automatic Digital Air Compressors. Simple to use and small enough to squeeze into all but the most tightly packed of MX-5s, the compressor features a self-select pressure mode with automatic switch off, plus a 2-piece adaptor for blowing up air-beds and beach balls. It might not be the most exciting way to spend £40, but you’ll be glad of it next time you get a flat!

Breathalyser Kit, Twin Pack
Carrying a pair of breathalysers while driving is now enshrined within French law, meaning it’s illegal to set off on a gallic jaunt without them. This neat twin-pack will keep you in the gendarmes’ good books and is small enough to tuck neatly into your glovebox, meaning it won’t take up valuable storage space.

First Aid Kit, Warning Triangle and High Vis Jacket
This genuine Mazda accessory contains everything you need to stay safe when stopped at the side of the road, including a free-standing warning triangle, high visibility jacket and, in case of emergencies, a first aid kit. Carrying all three is a legal requirement when traveling in many European countries (including France), but its so useful and so reasonably priced that we’d wholeheartedly recommend picking one up anyway, no matter where you plan on driving.
