WHY DO I HATE CROSSOVERS
Crossovers and SUV’s are becoming more and more popular recently. So why do I think that they are useless and that it’s better to get away from them?
- They are more expensive to buy
Because that Crossovers normally have a bigger body than the super mini of the family car they are based on they cost more than them. For example, Renault Clio and Renault Captur in the same version (Engine and equipment) the Captur costs will cost over 1500 pounds and the difference between a BMW X3 and a 3 series with the same Engine and the same equipment have a difference of about 6000 pounds more than the Clio and all you will got more from the captur is a bit more pose and sitting slightly higher. Something that you could do only by putting a few pillows under your seat
2.Their fuel economy is worse
To look like an off roader, the small Crossovers need to be higher and have a bit of stuff around them. As a result they weigh more than the cars they are based on which effects the fuel consumption. The difference between the Audi A3 and the Audi Q3 which is based on the same model has combined fuel consumption of 15.1 kilometers a liter while the Audi A3 with the same engine has a combined fuel consumption rate of 17.8 kilometers a liter.
- They are slower
As we’ve seen recently on an episode of “The Grand tour” an Alfa Romeo Stelvio is slower than a BMW M3 although it has more power because of a few reasons. It is heavier and higher and as a result it was a lot slower on the track. Now you might say that but the Alfa has got better skills on gravel but the fact is that it will be just as bad off road as any family or little hatchback. A mercedes A 45 AMG and a Mercedes GLA 45 AMG with the same engine and the same amount of power has a difference of 0.2 seconds in the 0-100 kp/h time and an Audi RS3 and an Audi RS Q3 has a difference of 0.3 seconds. It may not sound a lot but when you take into prospective that the q3 weighs more and that it is slightly higher of the ground you will find out that it will be slower not only accelerating to x speed but also in cornering and braking. An Alfa Romeo Stelvio and an Alfa Romeo Giulia both with the QV version set a lap time in the Nurburgring and the time of the Giulia was almost 20 seconds faster.
- They can’t really go off road
around 10 years ago there were still some crossovers that really could go off road. However this days it’s nearly impossible to find one and what was the biggest advantage off a crossover over a smaller car has been wiped out. Some of this days crossovers like the Juke, the Captur, Tucson and many other crossovers can’t go off road more than any ordinary car can do. some of this crossovers even have just front wheel drive so if you leave in Scandinavia for example, it also excludes their advantage of better grip in snow
- Some of them aren’t a lot bigger than a family car when it comes to size in the boot
This thing isn’t talking about all the crossovers because some of them do have a much bigger boot and a lot more space than the family car. However some of them are at the same size and that gives them no advantages on the smaller cars they are based on or on the family car they are trying to “prove” that it is better than it
That’s all I have to right and this is my conclusion. I am not saying that crossovers don’t have good things, but when you put them near a family car and check how many advantages the family car has in comparison to the crossovers. It does make me at least wonder, how do the crossovers become more and more popular?

All the information i took is from the official sites of the car manufacture
I think Crossovers are wrongly preceived as being safter, stronger and more capable. Also people like to like they are rich and bigger cars can give that impression. And its true they arent as roomy as people think and the load hight of the tailgate is awkwardly high. Its mainly an image thing. Im not keen on Crossovers and that stats arent as good as there car counter parts. I want to see more sleeker, nicer looking Saloons/Sedans and Estates instead.
I agree. I don’t know why people think they look wealthy with a crossover, most of them are ugly. I mean, why would you even buy one? They have almost NO off-roading capability from the factory, and most of them are based off of a car chassis which is not designed to be taken offroad anyways.
They still sell like hot cakes. They’re not going away any time soon…
Sadly
Watch. Fuel prices will go up, they will try tomsell them, and everyone will either drive a Civic or a leaf.
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh your exposing the secret!
I live in Canada and even an AWD sedan isnt practical enough because of how much snow we get. A crossover is just enough and most of them have center lockers so they are great in heavy snow, plus you get lots of room for passangers and cargo.
If you need room for passengers and cargo you can own a minivan
I disagree. For years my parents have driven small FWD cars. MK2 Golfs and Jettas, a MK3 Golf, and my mom has a MK5 Jetta now. Before I can remember, they drove 70s Honda Civics. The only advantage I see of having a crossover is AWD, which is becoming very common on normal cars now. As long as you have snow tires and you drive to the conditions, you won’t have an issue.
You pay more for the extra space.
True.
That’s like hating on semi trucks because they’re slow. Terrible logic.
They’re family vehicles. Well, for the most part. Poor comparison, and i don’t think anyone would cross-shop a Wrangler with a RAV4.
The compact CUVs are pretty useless imo, but anything CR-V size or bigger is actually quite useful.
Then you can own a minivan that has as much space as a crossover
A Semi truck is slow because its designed to pull alot more weight and is geared low. Some Crossovers have the same parts as a car. Its a trade of I guess between a car better for normal road use and budget or a car better in uncleared snowy roads, that said on snowy roads an Impreza with snow tyres would probably pull stuck 2 wheel drive crossover out the snow.
I meant roading
Do you like the Nismo Juke or the JCW Countryman?
No. I’ll prefer the JCW cooper that is smaller and faster
They are more suitable for older people though, because the height means that the sitting position is similar to a regular old kitchen chair, which in turn means that getting in and out is easier for your back
My grandma is 87 and she uses pillows for that. You don’t need to spend more money to seat higher
