The World Endurance Championship’s newly established ‘hypercar class’ is already shaping up rather nicely. Aston Martin has announced that it’ll field at least two race-spec Valkyries when the rules arrive from 2021, while Toyota is effectively creating a GT One successor in the GR Super Sport just so it can join the party.

Now, it turns out that Lamborghini is tempted. Speaking to Autocar, CEO Stefano Domenicali said: “There are discussions and we are looking to understand the regulations to see if it is of interest”. Before you get too ahead of yourself, he did add: “There is nothing to say until the evaluation is finished, and at that point the answer could be yes or no. For now, it is possible”.

Should Lamborghini take the plunge, it wouldn’t have the cash to create a whole new car for their entry. Instead, the one-off SC18 Alston is touted as a good starting point as it “shows that we have a base for what could be an interesting approach,” Domenicali said.

It’s early days, but you can’t help but relish the thought of two different V12-powered cars battling in the world’s premier endurance series, can you?

The new class, which will replace LMP1, will feature a minimum weight figure of 1100kg. Engines providing up to 750bhp will be allowed, while hybrid systems producing no more than 270bhp are permitted, but not mandatory.

15 different manufacturers attended talks with the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) including McLaren, Ferrari and Ford, although the latter manufacturer has since ruled itself out.

If a lot of manufacturers make the step this WEC spec will surpasse F1 in my opinion. It will be more appealing to see this rather than a vettel VS Hamilton race
