Discs are way better than drum brakes.

I’ve been banging on about this for ages….

In all seriousness, I did a swap on and old 1962 Land Rover back in the day and the difference was crazy. It wasn’t just the stopping power, it was the amount of control.

Well drum brakes are great for stopping a lot of weight. From a performance aspect they are terrible though.

Budget cars made for developing countries don’t have the option of using disk brakes all around as it would blow budgets

Theyre great for trucks because you can always make the drum wider but with a disk your limited by the diameter of the wheel but on passenger cars theyre a little antiquated

Can someone explain to me (as I’m new to cars & mechanics in general), doesn’t the rear brakes only used when u stop (handbrake) ? Correct me if I’m wrong, I thought that when you press the brake pedal it only activates the front brakes ? (& sorry for my english, not my native language)

I believe on some cars the handbrakes only brake certain wheels. To my knowledge though for the most part it doesn’t matter if it’s the handbrake or the brake pedal you’re using, you’re going to be slowing all of the wheels. However front brakes do most of the stopping because of inertia and weight transfer when you step on the pedal . Kinda like when you slam on the brakes and your body goes forward, the weight of the car does too, so the front brakes end up needing to do most of the work

The brake pedal in modern cars are normally hydraulic and activate all the brakes. The E-brake or handbrake only activates the rear brakes and is independent of the foot brake. i.e. the handbrake should work even if your main pedal brake fails.

All of the brakes work when you step on the pedal. I dont know what the bias is on every car but i want to say that on most cars the braking force is biased towards the front with some force towards the back

Sort of, the rear brakes do brake but just not as much, that’s what the proportioning valve is for. Old cars usually don’t have one unless it been put on aftermarket.

Under braking about 70% is done by the front brakes and 30% by the back.

IF you can find all the brackets and such and you have half a clue, for once, yes.

If you’re cashless you won’t have money to track the car anyways to experience the benefits of rear discs. So just save your money. Drums are stronger anyways but with less endurance.
