Here's A McLaren 720S Laying Down A 9.7sec Quarter-Mile

This completely standard 720S clocked what's thought to be the fastest quarter-mile run for the model

We have a fresh round of look at how bonkers-fast the McLaren 720S is news for you today, as an example of the British supercar has just clocked an astonishing 9.7sec quarter-mile. The 720S in question completed the run - thought to be the fastest ever for the model - at ATCO Raceway in New Jersey, crossing the line at an astonishing 147mph.

This is the first time we’ve seen a 720S dispatch a standing-quarter in less time than a McLaren P1. And in less time than a Porsche 918 Spyder or LaFerrari, for that matter.

Drag Times reports that the owner used tyre warmers in place of the usual pre-run burnout, and the conditions were said to be ideal, with low humidity and the mercury hovering around the 40 degree mark.

It should come as no surprise that the 720S is a tad more powerful than advertised…

At this rate, we can expect the 720S’ possible LT variant to hit the mid or possibly even the low 9s… Damn McLaren, you crazy.

@Matt Robinson. Please please look up the track on its topography and everything about it. It will tell you it has a slope somewhere. Not trying to be a kill joy but Atco is known in my state as being the worst track to go to to drag race. I go because its cheap to race all day there. $20 or $25 for all night drag racing.

9.7 second the cuarter of mile. That’s what mi car does from 0 to 60 (kmh sadly).

HA I dream of that! 0-60 kmh for me takes a… erm… relaxed 10.2. 0-100…. with just me in the car and a nearly empty tank… well I’ll put it to you this way. In the time it takes a koenigsegg to go from 0-400-0, my car has just about found its way up to the giddy heights of 95km/h…. it takes a further 8 seconds to hit 100 and to get to it’s top speed of 142km/h, you’re looking at about 3m 30s - finding a bit of road long enough to test the speed was an absolute mission. To top it all off, I couldn’t run it above 107kmh for more than about 8 minutes, due to it’s tendancy to overheat due to the higher rpms. Unfortunately I never could tell if it was overheating unless I could see the steam, due to the temp. gauge being broken. Still, it didn’t stop me from keeping up with a Mercedes SLR through the twisties once.

There’s a lot of cars which take longer to 60 than this beast needs to do the 1/4 mi.
