Tesla Model S Garners Over 500 Orders

Exactly one week after unveiling the Model S Sedan to the public, Tesla has issued a press release announcing reservation numbers on the super sedan. Along with that is new information on the Roadster, with March marking a delivery record. Way to go Tesla!

520 orders! In one week, no less. To me, that's extremely impressive. Especially the 1. State of the Economy and 2. Fact that these are paid reservations slots. It means 52o people either put $5,000 or $40,000 down on an Model S. Tesla didn't say which but either number is impressive.

If half put $5,000 and half put down $40,000 that's $11,700,000 into Tesla's coffers. Nice little boost, eh? That's in the first week too. The car's East Coast debut is coming tonight in Washington, D.C at the National Building Museum.

Expect that to garner more orders as well. Telsa plans to show the car in New York, Miami, Chicago and Seattle over this Spring and Summer. That should help continue orders and momentum for Tesla (probably translates into Roadster sales too).

The $40,000 reservation fee puts you on the list for the limited 2,000 Signature Edition run vehicles. $5,000 puts you on the waiting list for the standard Model S. Delivery is determined by your place in line/time of order.

Other updates on the Model S include information that you can check the state of your car's charge remotely on your iPhone! I love the integration, I assume Tesla will be developing it's own Model S App.

Imagine a branded car control app on your iPhone? Pretty amazing stuff! The Roadster keeps on forging ahead as well. Tesla delivered 104 Roadsters in March, an impressive number and a company record. So far Tesla has delivered 170 cars this quarter. Puts everything into perspective; they're really ramping up production, which will help the company meet it's goal of mid-year profitability.

Tesla plans to open stores this year in Chicago, London, New York, Miami, Seattle, Washington, D.C. and Munich.

Tesla says the numbers far exceeded their optimistic internal projections. Looks like the Model S is off to a roaring start!
