Hyundai's Dramatic 800bhp Pikes Peak Racer Looks As Immense As It Sounds
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is an annual event which carves its way through more than 12 miles of mountainous roads in Colorado. While it's now fully paved, competitors need nerves of steel to hoon so close to the road's huge drops.
While Peugeot has been making loud noises about its return to the event with the T16, it's now Hyundai's turn to shout about its Unlimited race car. The catchily named Hyundai RMR PM580-T is wide, low and looks precisely like nothing in its range. Not even the Genesis headlight stickers count, sorry.
The car is built around a carbonfibre monocoque tub. Lift the back-end and you're faced with Hyundai's Lambda V6 engine, bored out from 3.8- to 4.1-litres and fitted with a massive Garrett turbo.
Other performance gubbins such as a custom intake, exhaust and engine management help feed the rear wheels with more than 800bhp. It also has a sequential six-speed gearbox, but the tight twists of Pikes Peak should mean it probably won't see north of fourth too often.
The wheelman is Rhys Millen, Hyundai's resident drift king, so here's hoping we'll see a few sideways practice runs.
