This F1 Car Hit The Barrier So Hard, The Steering Wheel Came Off

Marcus Ericsson went over the slippery Stowe exit kerb during F1 practice for the British GP at Silverstone and spun into the wall at incredibly high speed, hitting the barrier with enough force to throw the steering wheel off!

Ericsson managed to climb out of the car on his own and appears to be unharmed, although he has been transported to hospital for routine check-ups. But his car is far from OK and it looks likely that he will have to skip F1 qualifying.

Update:

So it seems Ericsson’s knee hit the steering wheel release, which caused it to come off. But still, a pretty nasty shunt and we’ve not really seen the steering wheel come off before! An unusual incident, but the main thing is Ericsson is OK.

I know nascar isnt as easy as it looks and nobody is gonna chang that and i also know that F1 isnt easy either. Anyway why do F1 fans always say nascar is easy because its just turning left but F1 drivers crash even with all of the tech and downforce they have these days

Doesn’t matter how much tech or downforce you have, driving on the limit is still driving on the limit.. The slightest mistake can lead to unsettling the car and .. the faster you go, the less likely you can avoid crashing. That goes for both Nascar and F1.

Overall Nascar is about keeping momentum, nailing that perfect line. It’s not easy by any means to keep the car perfectly balanced at those speeds, but it’s not as technical as having to put in perfect 15-corner laps while dealing with huge g-forces and big speed differentials all the time.
