Another Lagonda Concept?

Well, well, well! What do you know, is someone at Aston Martin actually listening? I think so, if a report by French car site "Le Blog Auto" is to be believed.

It goes without saying that the concept at Geneva wasn't um - well received. There was a collective sigh of disappointment from the automotive press at it's unveiling. I'm sure that had to register with the powers that be at Aston Martin.

While French translation is sketchy, little defending of the car was done by Aston Martin's David Richards. Here is the translation from French:

"(The Lagonda)...is only an essay, constructed with just the intention to see what that was going to give and the welcome that it was going to receive.  It does not imply a continuation for this model and Lagonda will present a new concept for as early as the beginning of the month of May, completely opposed to the one that you were able to see in Geneva"

I did a bit of editing on that to make it a tad more coherent. Think we could get a clearer sentence then that. You get the jist though: this isn't something they're bound to stick with no matter what, and they may be reconsidering based on Geneva's ho hum reception.

That is definitely a good development! In his words the new concept will be "Completely opposed...to the one in Geneva". Completely opposed could mean a lot of things. Maybe a sedan concept? Notice there was no specificity to what exactly the concept will be.

Maybe they're deciding between two vehicles? Because this specific Lagonda Concept as it is certainly isn't set in stone for production. The Lagonda brand is a near certainty, as it is a key part of AM's future growth strategy, but the vehicles that might wear it are not (yet).

This isn't to say I hate the Lagonda concept, in fact I think it's very nice and even might make sense in emerging markets. I just think Aston Martin could do better in representing the Lagonda name. Maybe even introduce a Lagonda lineup that includes both sedan and SUV. That could work too.

One of the news items that came out recently regarding the Lagonda SUV Concept is platform sharing with the Mercedes GL. According to Aston Martin Chairman Ulrich Bez, they tested a wide variety of vehicles and found the GL to be most suitable.

I'm more inclined to believe that it has something to do with the Aston Martin-Mercedes partnership formed a while back.

Although I won't be getting my hopes up too much, I am pretty excited to hear this as it was unexpected. It'll be very interesting to see what the next concept brings!

We've heard some rumblings of a S-Class-based Lagonda (that pesky partnership popping again) so maybe we'll get the proper revival we've all been hoping for after all.
