All-Electric Maserati Alfieri Incoming, Will Do 0-60mph In Under Two Seconds

The four-year-old Alfieri concept is becoming a production reality at last, with hybrid and fully-electric powertrains
All-Electric Maserati Alfieri Incoming, Will Do 0-60mph In Under Two Seconds

Maserati unleashed its gorgeous Alfieri concept over four years ago. After a long stream of will they/won’t they reports and rumours most of us ended up forgetting all about the car, but the Italian marque is now saying it will finally build a production.

But, it won’t be the conventional sports car that was originally expected: nope, Maserati is making an all-electric Tesla Roadster-beater, and it’ll be outrageously quick. As in 0-60mph in less than two seconds quick.

If you still want a little internal combustion going on, there will be plug-in hybrid version. There’ll also be a third powertrain option, although it isn’t clear how that will shape up.
The Alfieri EV will - along with electric versions of the next-gen Quattroporte saloon and Levante SUV - feature all-wheel drive, triple-motor electric powertrains with a torque vectoring function. All - including an Alfieri Cabriolet - will be here by 2022.

All-Electric Maserati Alfieri Incoming, Will Do 0-60mph In Under Two Seconds

Speaking during Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ Capital Markets Day, Maserati chief Tim Kuniskis had the following to say:

“From a product standpoint, it may look as if Maserati is challenging Porsche and Tesla. We are. We’re going to accomplish this by bringing the market something no other player in the industry can match.”

Maserati struggle to get the electrics in their cabins right and now they think they can build a whole electric car xD?

On a serious note, this seems interesting but too un-Maserati. I’d almost prefer this to be badged as a Ferrari.

Won’t happen, Ferrari is independent now and as such doesn’t have the access to Maserati cars anymore

But it’s like the most un-Ferrari thing.

Good lord… I haven’t seen car news this exciting in a long time. I will be less excited if it comes only in electric, but still. This would easily be the best looking production car currently on sale.

I don’t want to critizise this very car but what I always have to think about when I hear of such incredibly fast cars is what Matt LeBlanc once said while comparing the Porsche 911R and GT3 RS: The carmakers seem to always go by the numbers and don’t care about the fun that the driver should have. Sure, I’ve never driven such a fast car and I don’t even have a drivers’ license; maybe the Alfieri would be great fun, but I think more modern cars like the Porsche 911R/T/ GT3 Touring, Miata, Caterham Seven should exist. Not too much Power (well, exept the 911R / 911 GT3T but at least it’s kind of usable in that case), Manual Gearbox, lightweight, not too ‘show-y’.
