The AeroMobil Car Plane Is Proof That Pigs Will Fly

Attempts at making flying cars are usually laughably bad, but this one actually looks plausible

Flying cars: there's been countless attempts to make the idea a reality, but most efforts are either way too far fetched or just hilariously awful. The AeroMobil 2.5 prototype, by Slovak engineer Stefan Klein, is one of the most convincing attempts we've ever seen. And as you can see from this video, it actually flies.

This svelte package drives along with the wings folded back out of the way. When it reaches the airport, the wings fold forward in just a matter of seconds, making the AeroMobil ready to fly. A Rotax 912 piston aircraft engine powers the machine in both car and aeroplane modes. On the road, it'll manage a respectful 100mph, while in the sky it's capable of 124mph.

Klein is pretty realistic too. He's not expecting to revolutionise global transport, but thinks his creation has a place in countries where the transport infrastructure is poor. When towns or cities hundreds of miles apart are linked by only a shoddy dirt road, Klein hopes this flying car could be a massively useful tool.

Time will tell if the AeroMobil can become a reality or if it's just another flying car pipe dream, but we really hope this idea takes off.
