Need help for a presentation about Japanese cars and the car culture in Japan.
Hey CTzens,
I am a member of a local Community of Anime and Manga enthusiasts and since we talk a lot about japanese culture, I figured I might give them an insight on the fascination about Japanese cars and what makes them and the culture around it so unique.
But why do I need your help? Well, basically I got a concept in my head what i want to talk about and I would appreciate if you add any idea in the comments about what you want me to talk about, add something to an existing idea or correct me if I’m wrong about something. I appreciate any kind of help!
Let's get cracking!
Firstly I want to split the presentation in multiple parts, because the sheer amount of things is just too much for one presentation.
So I thought I would split it in the following topics (please add your suggestions) and depending on the time I can do multiple topics per meet.
If you have any good videos, images, or articles to study, please leave a comment!
1. The different manufacturers
Here I want to talk about the different car manufacturers and their brands (like Toyota —> Lexus).
Also I would like to do a short history lesson about every manufacturer. Including how and when the company was founded maybe show the evolution of the company logo and maybe what makes the company so unique (Mazda —> rotary engines).
I want to keep this part short because it’s gonna be boring.
2. What it is like to own a car in Japan
Since owning a car is quite different to here in Austria where I live (except that both countries have a lot of mountains) in this topic I want to cover how it is like to commute on a day-to-day basis in a big city like Tokyo, how much it costs to own a car and how Kei cars work and how it is like to travel in Japan with a car (mountains, yay).
3. The culture in general and the tuning culture
JDM or tuner doesn’t matter what you call it, for non-petrolheads they have no meaning. That’s why I want to explain to those people why others could fanboy a certain car or engine.
Also here I want to show them some of the most popular JDM/tuner cars for every brand and talk about them a bit and show on these cars what tuning can do and why people do it.
Write a car into the comments if you feel like it should be covered (preferred with information why), and please spare me the obvious ones like the Supra/Skylines/RX-7/AE86/Impreza/Evo/etc. I already have them in mind.
4. Cars in pop culture
Since I am in a Anime and Manga community I should not leave out this one :D.
That means showing them Animes like Initial D or Wangan Midnight.
Please tell me if you have any ideas what else to talk about here.
5. Car meets
This will be a short one.
Here i want to explain a car meet very briefly and show some pictures of meets.
Also show them some popular car meet spots (e.g. Daikoku PA).
6. Motorsport and racing (legal and illegal)
May it be street racing, touge, drifting, rallying or racing on a circuit (please help me here with the different types).
I want to show them the mentality behind them, the work that goes into them and the fascination that comes from it.
Basically that’s all I have at the moment!
Thanks for reading and helping me out!
Comments
Japan has important motorcycle culture aswell, if you want you could mention it aswell.
Did not know about that! I’ll look into it.
I did this exact presentation. I talked about bosozoku and kanjo. As well as illegal meets. As well as the things listed above
I will research those, since I don’t know a lot about them.
Thanks for the input!
Important cars for the japanese car culture:
Honda Civic/CRX/Integra
Nissan 180sx/Silvia
(perhaps these are obvious but they are important)
Other than that, Toyota Chaser is pretty important and a commonly seen drift car in japan but not elsewhere in the world. It’s a popular platform since its easily available in japan, rwd and 1JZ powered. Same goes with Cefiro.
You should mention Keiichi Tsuchiya. a very influental person in the JDM culture who is responsible for making drifting blow up so much. He was also involved in the making of Initial D I believe.
Thanks! I would have probalby forgotten about the Chaser.
