FRS/BRZ/GT86 fuel type requirement? I heard somewhere that the FA20 in said cars requires premium feul in order to take advantage of all 200 ponies. Is this true?
All cars run better on higher octane fuel, in some cases, depending on the ethanol quantity in your area.
The determining factors in performance, as relevant to gasoline/petrol are as follows:
1: purity (is it watered down with ethanol?) 2: flashpoint and self-ignition point under pressure (the point where a gasoline will spontaneously combust, which depends on many factors including temperature and compression ratio.) 3: fuel pressure and quantity (this is worsened by dirty injectors and fuel lines, see point #1 about ethanol)
You want a 100% purity, with the correct octane rating for the car and you want clean fuel lines and injectors.
I - for example - only buy gasoline from Shell gas station because they confirmed that their 91+ octane rating gasoline is ethanol free and 100% pure. This helps both fuel economy (my WRX can get 5L/100km.) and power (I kept up with a tuned and built Evo X yesterday, to my own astonishment… He wasn’t driving it that hard, but hard enough…)
ditto…
5l/100km is impressive
Out of curiosity, I researched further: 94+ octane is best. You should buy the best gasoline available in your area.
Use of anything less than 91 could result in a voided manufacturer’s warranty, although I can not be certain… The quote I found says “use of 91 Octane will not void warranty…” which is implicitly vague about consequences of using 90 or lower…
91 octane will cause pinging and a slight drop in performance
