This 11,000-Mile Toyota Supra Sold For An Absurd $173,600

An A80 sold at an RM Sotheby's auction for the equivalent of over £130,000, smashing the amount fetched for a similar car a few weeks ago

If you thought the madness of the modern classic car market had reached its peak when a 7111-mile Toyota Supra sold for $121,000, we have some troubling news for you.

The 1994 example has been trumped by another A80 of the same vintage, and quite spectacularly - the car you see here sold at the recent RM Sotheby’s Amelia Island sale for $173,600. To put that ridiculous figure in context, it’s enough to buy three examples of the new A90 Supra in the USA.

In good old-fashioned British Pound Sterling meanwhile, that figure is £133,520 at current exchange rates, enough for an Audi R8 Performance with many options added. If you feel like you want to stop the world and get off right now, we perfectly understand.

With 11,200 miles on the clock, it’s actually travelled a little further than the $121,000 A80 from a few weeks ago. It’s a twin-turbo model with a manual gearbox, as you’d probably expect given the bonkers hammer price.

The car was originally sold new in Illinois, where it stayed for “at least two years” and clocked just over half its present mileage. About a year ago it was imported to Switzerland.

The RM Sotheby’s auction page concludes that “It remains in brilliant and largely original condition throughout”. And indeed, it does look immaculate. But $173,600? Really?
