The Abarth 124 R-GT Sounds Like It Needs Anger Management

Footage of Abarth's new rear-wheel drive rally machine undergoing testing has emerged, and it's all about angry noises and sliding

Want the most potent version of the Fiat 124 Spider possible? You’ll probably have the Abarth 124 in mind, but there is a pretty significant step up from that: the 124 R-GT.

Revealed at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show alongside the regular Abarth 124, the €150,000 car has - hence the name - been built to FIA R-GT regulations. It puts out 296bhp from a 1.8-litre turbocharged four-pot, is still very much rear-wheel drive, and features radically overhauled suspension.

It’s seen testing in the footage above in preparation for the 2017 season. Sounds pretty angry, no?

I just drove a 300bhp turbocharged 91 miata for a review I’m putting out Friday. The thing was insane. I more than understand why someone would want this. But I can assure you, the one I drove cost a lot less than 150,000…

This Abarth is a racecar, the price is because everything inside it must have the official FIA omologation.. that’s not a tuned car for track day events, that’s an official FIA rally car! A brand new rally Clio R3T costs something like 70-80k €

Call me Billy Blue Biased Boll*cks, but I’d prefer the Fiat 124 over the new MX-5.
