Nobody Managed To Reach The End Of A Formula 4 Race In Malaysia

As well as Formula 1, the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia is also playing host to the first round of the Formula 4 South East Asia championship this weekend.

With the series scheduled to run multiple races over the weekend it’s a pretty packed schedule, and two back-to-back races led to the extraordinary scenario of seeing precisely zero cars reach the end of the eight-lap race.

On lap five, one driver stopped, having run out of fuel. Four then stopped on lap six, followed by another three on lap seven. On the eighth and final lap, only one car was left running, that of Kane Shepherd.

But shortly after beginning the final lap, he too found himself out of fuel, leaving the safety car (which had been deployed because of all the stricken cars) to take the chequered flag on its own in one of the most bizarre races in memory.

How did it happen? Well, unlike most other championships, in F4 SEA all the cars are run by the same team, and it seems it miscalculated the amount of fuel that would be needed for the cars to complete both races. Oops.

Since nobody actually reached the end, officials declared the result from the end of lap seven, giving Shepherd the win.
