TOYOTA Sera - A Poor Man's Winged Dream!

Many of us have the dream to own a super car at some point in our lives with looks that seek everyone’s attention and an exhaust which can be heard from the moon. But for many of us its still a dream to own a Lamborghini with the scissor doors or the elegant and beautiful butterfly one’s int the Mclaren’s. But fear not because Toyota in the 90’s had just the thing which came on the same level of cool as super cars with its quirky design and a place for everyone’s pocket. In comes the Toyota Sera, released in 1990 as a 2+2 hatchback and you guesses it - BUTTERFLY DOORS! Even though it was kept to stun the Japanese market, many admirers of this economical CRAZY DOOR car found the routes to achieve this mildly attainable dream of theirs in other countries.

It was really a different car and also featured a glass tailgate and was one of the first cars with projector headlamps. It came with a 1.5 L engine namely 4 5E-FHE also found in the Starlet and two transmission options - a 4-speed auto and a 5-speed manual and was front wheel drive only unlike many super cars.

Everything on the interior was again typical Toyota and has nothing to write about but the doors alone would have sold me on this. Production of this beauty ended in 1995 and Toyota managed to roll out nearly 16000 of these out of the factory. Its another non-conventional car to love from the Toyota’s stable and might be the achievable dream for a lot of us because at the end it has a lot in common with Good old super cars like 4 wheels, an engine, a steering wheel, and those BUTTERFLY doors and also evades the bad things about super cars like cost of running and reliability!
