Short vs long nose Miatas

Is there a difference between the short and long nose engines if so what the hell is it ?is one more reliable? HELP

Mostly just that the short have a weird crank thing that happens to a few cars.

The shaft on the end of the crank where the pulley fits, wears on the short nosed version.
This pulley drives the timing and auxiliary belts, so if it fails massive engine failure is possible.
Only the very early 1.6l engines have the short crank. Later ones and all 1.8l have the long crank.

Thank you for the detail I’m guessing only 89-93 1.6 had short nose?
