6 Downsides Of Being A Petrolhead

1. You never have any spare money

Like it or not, our lifestyle is ruddy expensive. Sure, motoring isn’t really cheap for anyone, but we generally like to go for cars which cost more to tax and insure, are pricier to service and drink far more fuel. Oh, and we also find it very difficult to resist the draw of new car parts. And accessories. And car wash products. Which leads us nicely on to point two:

2. Your water bills are massive

If you take pride in your car, you’ll want it to stay clean. The downside of that? You’ll get through a hell of a lot of water.

3. Your wife/girlfriend/husband/boyfriend is jealous of your car

If you have someone in your life, let’s face it: they’ll probably end up playing second fiddle to your car. You’ll spend more money on your car, and maybe even more time with your car, making the other half feel like he or she is a bit of a third wheel (no pun intended) in the relationship.

4. You lose many hours of sleep due to time spent trawling the classifieds

Unlike regular folk, we know that classifieds aren’t just to be used when you’re looking for a new car. Oh no. Whether you want to seek out your future ride long before you have the money to buy it, are finding recommendations for a friend, pretending you’re rich and checking out your dream rides or are simply a bit bored, the classifieds are a great place to waste time. Only trouble is, you might get a bit addicted.

5.Your hands are never properly clean

This doesn’t apply to all petrolheads, but the more hands-on amongst us will know these feels. No matter how much you scrub, if you work on your car a lot, your hands will rarely be squeaky clean. You’ve probably upset whoever you live with on a few occasions by leaving black fingerprints on the fridge.

6. You constantly have to 'explain' your car to people who don't get it

While CT is a safe haven for petrolheads the world over, things aren’t so easy IRL. Unless it’s something very obviously special, non car guys and girls probably won’t get your choice of car, particularly if it’s something a little older. You’ll have to constantly explain to these philistines why your car is great, and isn’t just ‘some old banger’ like they seem to think.

But...

While dealing with these things can be a chore, it’s more than worth putting up with them. After all, being a petrolhead and getting involved in the car community is a pretty awesome way to live, don’t you think?
