Rejoice: Lorry Underride Bars That Actually Work Are Now In Existence
As has been highlighted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) before, underride guards on lorries are often quite rubbish at the one job they have. The idea is they stop cars sliding under trailers, but the reality is many are ineffectual at avoiding the kind of accident that that no airbag nor crumble zone can combat.
Thankfully, it seems things are beginning to change. The IIHS has this week released a series of videos showing its ‘Toughguard’ award winners, which all do a much better job and stopping horrific, windscreen crushing accidents the traditional underride bars we’re used to seeing.
Five designs were highlighted: the Wasbach, Stoughton, Vanguard, Manac and Great Dane. Hopefully we’ll be seeing these safer bits of kit out on the road soon…

The Manac seems to have been designed with Peugeot drivers in mind…
Great…. another thing that car guys are never going to use.
There was never even an issue for these guys.
Now its going to scrape everywhere.
Or you know. Pay attention
Brake failure, heart attack, stroke, rear ended, black out…
I like the design of the wabash the best. From an engineering standpoint it has the stronger design to prevent under ride
Chevy use headbutt!!! (It was not effective)
There always have been trailers with functional underride bars. The problem was, that they were more expensive so most bought the cheaper ones.
That’s greed for you…
Yup, people dont udnderstand that when a company.needs a fleet of these things that theyre going to buy the cheaper ones and that MTO doesnt inspect the bars. If.you have the bars then youre good to go.
