Rejoice: Lorry Underride Bars That Actually Work Are Now In Existence

Underride bars - which are supposed to prevent cars from sliding under lorry trailers - have a reputation for being rather inadequate at their job. Happily, some better designs now exist

As has been highlighted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) before, underride guards on lorries are often quite rubbish at the one job they have. The idea is they stop cars sliding under trailers, but the reality is many are ineffectual at avoiding the kind of accident that that no airbag nor crumble zone can combat.

Thankfully, it seems things are beginning to change. The IIHS has this week released a series of videos showing its ‘Toughguard’ award winners, which all do a much better job and stopping horrific, windscreen crushing accidents the traditional underride bars we’re used to seeing.

Five designs were highlighted: the Wasbach, Stoughton, Vanguard, Manac and Great Dane. Hopefully we’ll be seeing these safer bits of kit out on the road soon…

Darwinisim. If you can’t look up and see a whole artic trailer (semi trailer) then it’s just natural selection at work.
