If you've never heard of it, diesel runaway usually occurs due to worn pistons. Scarily, turning the ignition off will make no difference, but if it's a manual you can put the car into a high gear, stamp on the brakes, and drop the clutch. Fortunately it appears a passerby knew what to do and brought this catastrophic episode to an end.
