It’s not worth it when you don’t have a car

Yeah it’s pretty obvious, putting 97 in a car that the manufacturers recommend 89 won’t help at all,
higher octane =/= more power coz engines are designed to suit a certain type of fuel for optimum performance. However with supporting mods (remap, etc.) it might help xD

What if Manufacturers reccomend Premium?

« Higher octane means more resistance to knocking ».
It does not mean more power at all. If an engine is designed for low octane, it means compression is « low » and the gaz will ignite in any case. If you put premium in this same engine, which is supposed to be compressed more than regular, your engine won’t be able to. So potentially some of the gas might not burn properly and make you loose power.

On the opposite side, using regular gas instead of premium in high compression engines might generate Knocking, and even if not it could still worn the engine faster over time…

In Austria, 91 octane gas is the worst you could go with.

We usually have 91, 93 and 98 octane at the pumps

It’s not the same ratings. 91 over there doesn’t come close to the quality of 91 over here. It’s like Celsius and Fahrenheit.

95 is the standard RON here in Ireland! Used to be able to get 97 for a very high premium but not worth it in a high powered car that eats fuel! Supplement with methanol now when on high boost and use less fuel doing It!! Methanol is half the price of petrol 👍

My car actually requires premium fuel. The owner’s manual says that 91 octane is required. 87 can be substituted safely but there will be a significant drop in power and economy due to the engine retarding timing and enriching the fuel mixture to prevent knocking. I found this to be very true as when I ran regular gasoline my fuel mileage went down from 22 mpg to like 8-10 mpg. The car felt noticeably slower and everyone said it smoked black out the exhaust and stunk really bad like unburnt fuel. Running premium fuel stops all of this.

What car do you have? That’s a drastic difference over 4 points in the RON!
