Here's The Next BMW M3 Making Angry Straight-Six Noises At The 'Ring
An all-new BMW M3 will be landing later this year. The expectation is for the ‘G80’ M3 to make its first appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, although thanks to this Nurburgring spy video, we can have a cheeky preview of the car right now.
Under the bonnet will be the new ‘S58’ inline-six turbo engine which made its debut in the X3 M and X4 M. Despite complying with the current, extremely stringent emissions and noise regulations, it still sounds nicely angry, doesn’t it?
Going by the latest batch of rumours, the new M3 will be the first ever to be fitted with an ‘xDrive’ all-wheel drive system, although it’s been reported that there will be a rear-wheel drive, manual-gearbox ‘M3 Pure’ available. Almost sounds too good to be true, but we’re keeping our fingers firmly crossed.
Power and torque figures should rise relative to the outgoing F80 M3. If BMW opts to give the car the same output as the X3 M, we’d be looking at 471bhp in standard trim, and 503bhp in Competition guise.
Dynamically, we have high hopes. The G20 3-series is a good starting point for an M Division version, being both lighter and stiffer than the old F30 3er. It’s great to drive even in 320d form, so the full M experience should be something rather special.
Growing up on a diet of World Rally Championship highlights and lengthy Gran Turismo 2 sessions, a life in cars was as good as inevitable for Matt.

Uhmm, the C63 and Guila QV have been making 500-ish bhp for the past 4-5 years…….
There seems to be a noticeable amount of body roll, hopefully that’ll get fixed before the production model

“Particularly furious noise”? “Nicely angry, doesnt it?” Do we have the same hears there? Absolutely…not at ALL ! It sounds particularly tame and muted, the sound when it starts is nonexistent, we hear more of the wheels on the apex than the motor itself. The only good point is that apparently it doesnt sound like a straight piped civic like the s55 but thats it. Lets hope m-perf exhaust resolve all this :/

I wasn’t very keen on the F80 M3 because it didn’t exactly look natural as a sedan. I prefer this design significantly more, and I feel like it’s going to be great.

I think you’ll find the S58 has two mono scroll turbos. Not a single twin scroll . Check all the sources properly . A single turbo 3.0 pushing out 500bhp , even a twin scroll would have far too much lag.

Crazy to think that when the E60 M5 came out it had 507bhp in full M mode and this humble M3 now has 503, albeit in competition form.
Then again, when we’re in the 300s for standard spec hot hatches - the M3 has the deliver something extra. Progress for you.
