This is some interesting news: The first run of Chevy Volts, GM's highly anticipated Prius fighter (that will show that "Americans can do that too!") will go on sale in their home state of Michigan. That's interesting because you'd think that they would roll them out in some more "fashionable" state like California or some such.
Oh wait, they ARE selling them in Cali first, but soon after, there would be sales in "other lead markets to follow." Turns out that Michigan will be one of those lead markets. Good, because that's what has to happen, both for the Volt to be a sales success, but also for the betterment of this planet: Cars like the Volt have to make it in the heartland. And let's face it, you can't get much more heartland than Michigan.
From a nuts and bolts standpoint, selling the Volt in California first makes a great deal of sense. The Golden State has a small but growing recharging infrastructure, for one thing. For another, cars like the Volt will sure appeal to the large number of plug-in vehicle fans there. And last, but certainly not least, there is important government support for grid-connected vehicles in the state.
Now Michigan, on the other hand, makes sense for a whole set of different reasons. Michigan is the Volt's home, so really, who cares if there's no infrastructure there. Also, both the concept and production versions were first announced at the Detroit Auto Show. The Volt was also designed and tested here as well as the car and battery packs being made in the state.
Now, whether the people of Michigan will adopt to the plug-in series hybrid as quickly as Californians will remains to be seen, but GM making a big push for the car in their home state is almost a given by this point in time.
