We could be only a few years away from seeing the LaFerrari’s replacement, according to Ferrari’s technology boss.

The model will be built in limited numbers and won’t have a Formula 1 engine. Autocar quotes chief technology officer Michael Leiters as saying:

“When we define our new roadmap of technology and innovation, we will then consider a replacement for LaFerrari.

“We want to do something different. It won’t be a road car with a Formula 1 engine because, to be realistic, it would need to idle at 2500-3000rpm and rev to 16,000rpm. The F50 used an F1 engine, but it needed to be changed a lot.”

Some corners of the media have compared the LaFerrari to the F40 in the way it broke new ground for the brand in terms of performance and advanced engineering. But while the F50 was marketed as an F1 car for the road when it superseded the F40 many years later, what comes after the LaFerrari will apparently make more concessions to usability.

Ferrari is still finalising its plans for the next half-decade so it will be six months before anyone knows for sure how long we’ll have to wait, but it’s going to have to be a serious steer to better the LaFerrari. In the meantime, let’s just hope for a name that translates better.
