Camaro a Hot Seller for GM
Bankruptcy (and the recession) have impacted General Motor's sales heavily across all brands and model lines. Image is also down as well; there is a negative stigma surrounding the company due to all that it's gone through and current government ownership.
Bankruptcy (and the recession) have impacted General Motor's sales heavily across all brands and model lines. Image is also down as well; there is a negative stigma surrounding the company due to all that it's gone through and current government ownership. There is a flip side; driving a GM is seen as being supportive but I think the bailout outweighs that in the marketplace.
At least one vehicle is selling well right now though, and that is the Camaro. The Camaro has been in the public's spotlight for the past few years as GM worked to hype everyone up for it's launch. Some have wished the car could've came sooner even. However, maybe now was just the perfect time for it, right when GM needed it most. In the midst of everything, it is selling well and helping to draw interest in the Chevrolet brand. I think that counts for a lot.
The car already has 25,000 orders, half of which have been fulfilled. Most cars are needing discounts to sell right now. Not the Camaro; it's actually selling for over $500 MSRP. Dealers can't get enough of them. Bloomberg reported James Schmid, general sales manager for a Chevrolet dealer in Bartow, Florida as saying “I won’t have a stocked Camaro for probably a year,”.
While the success of the Camaro obviously can't be replicated with every vehicle in GM's stable, it does show if there is a product buyers want, they'll find a way to get it.
