9 Highlights From Last Weekend’s Motorsport Action
Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene narrowly avoided getting run over by Felipe Massa during Austrian Grand Prix Friday practice. The incident promoted various amusing responses online, including this one:
Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg went head-to-head for pole position at the Red Bull Ring, but – incredibly – both went off on their final laps in Q3. Hamilton’s earlier time was quickest and he started the race from P1.
Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso’s nasty lap one crash was arguably the Austrian Grand Prix’s most dramatic moment. This amateur footage shot by a fan provided us with another view of the incident.
22 drivers were given penalties in total during Nascar’s Xfinity series race at Chicagoland, after pitting while the red light was still on – meaning pit lane was closed.
Erik Jones won the race, completing a clean sweep after also taking victory in Friday night’s Camping World Truck Series event in Iowa.
The Blancpain GT Series was in action at Paul Ricard in France for the 1000km endurance race. It was an action-packed six hours of racing, with the #23 Nissan GT Academy Team of Alex Buncombe, Wolfgang Reip and Katsumasa Chiyo winning.
We saw some big crashes last weekend during the GP3 races in Austria – the first being at the start after Mitch Gilbert’s stalled car was collected by Kevin Ceccon, and the second when Antonio Fuoco braked too late and hit Jann Mardenborough and Sandy Stuvik.
Luca Ghiotto and Oscar Tunjo won the two GP3 events. In GP2, Stoffel Vandoorne took his fourth feature race victory of the season, with Rio Haryanto winning the sprint.
The FIA World Rallycross Championship was in Germany for round five of the second. There was certainly plenty of action, as the video shows, with Davy Jeanney dominating to win Sunday’s final.
The Red Bull Global Rallycross series was also on track last weekend, this time in Daytona, Florida. Here, Ken Block reflects on the double-header round in just 43 seconds. Tanner Foust and Sebastian Eriksson won the two races.
