10 Highlights From Last Weekend’s Awesome Motorsport Action
1. Strong selfie game
There's no selfie quite like a @24hoursoflemans podium selfie. #LM24 @FIAWEC
What do you do when you’re standing on the iconic Le Mans 24 Hours podium? Take a selfie, of course! Not a bad view…
2. The underdog
Last weekend’s Le Mans threw up a surprising result, with Porsche’s less-favoured third car of Nico Hulkenberg, Earl Bamber and Nick Tandy taking victory at the famous endurance race.
Many expected the #17 and #18 cars to challenge, but it was the ‘underdog’ #19 that took the win after stunning stints in the second half of the race. Missed any of the action? Our full coverage can be found here.
IndyCar was in Toronto last weekend, with the street track producing one of the best races of the 2015 season so far. Josef Newgarden took his second victory in the series after a smart strategy in drying conditions, leading home CFH Racing teammate Luca Filippi.
Conor Daly hasn’t had the best of luck this year, but in his four IndyCar starts (he failed to race in the Indy 500 due to a reliability problem), he is certainly proving his worth – as this brilliant pass on Ryan Hunter-Raey showed in Toronto.
5. Lorenzo wins again
Jorge Lorenzo took his fourth consecutive victory last weekend after winning the Grand Prix of Catalunya. It was a commanding display, with the two-time champion finishing ahead of Valentino Rossi and Dani Pedrosa. Lorenzo now moves to within one point of Rossi in the championship.
It was a second straight retirement for reigning champion Marc Marquez, after crashing out on lap three. As you can see, he was a tad frustrated by the accident…
So as we know, Nascars only turn left. They also only run in dry conditions. The Quicken Loans 400 in Michigan was cut short thanks to a torrential downpour, with Kurt Busch winning.
As well as the Nascar Sprint Cup, the Xfinity series was also in Michigan. There were plenty of crashes - the eighth caution period was caused by a multi-car crash with 14 laps to go. Kyle Busch eventually took the win after a brief red flag period.
9. Ogier domination
Sebastien Ogier stamped his authority on the World Rally Championship yet again, after winning last weekend’s Rally Italia Sardegna. He now has a staggering 66-point lead in the standings. Hayden Paddon sprung a surprise in second.
The epic Stadium Super Trucks were in action in Toronto. Enjoy these awesome but short clips from the racing action, shot by spectator Stephen Francis.
